When Open Office began to lose direction, the LO fork was created and picked up the pieces. While OO has picked up the pieces in the last few years, LO has already become the dominant open source office suite.

Functionality - In terms of breadth of functionality, LO and OO have substantially more than most of the other Linux office suites.Since office suites are used a lot of different ways, you might not notice or care about certain features or tools but others might not have the same needs. My primary choice is Softmaker Office which I use most of the time. I also use a combination of Only Office, Libre Office and Microsoft Office Online when appropriate. I have never been tempted to use Microsoft Office in a vm. I suppose I would if I ever found I needed something that could only be done that way. Honestly, the longer I use Linux as my full-time desktop, the less often I open my Windows vm. If I am being truthful, the primary reason I don't use LO(or OO) is that I have to work in Microsoft Office at work and I find it difficult to transition back and forth. WPS Office, Softmaker Office and Only Office all have a UI much more closely aligned to Microsoft's office interface Subsequently I went Cloud and replaced most apps with cloud-alternatives that sync user-data and config-data I switched to Linux years ago by replacing my win apps with multi-platform alternatives first (ie-> firefox, outlook->thunderbird, MS Office-> Openoffice later libreoffice). (chromebooks and linux with GApps/G Suite and Zoho/Onlyoffice).

I found that docx editing kept me locked into having to have MS-stuff, until I discovered Onlyoffice. With Onlyoffice I can edit sensitive docxs on Manjaro or ChromeOS boxes without breaking noncloud policies, and I can edit docxs in my gdrive/onedrive/webdav that are too complex to convert. Libreoffice and Openoffice are device-centric solutions.

Onlyoffice is webservices centric and has an added offline documenteditor.
